This is an Athearn 90616 HO DCC Locomotive Adapter Board. The 90616 Athearn adapter board is what Athearn now supplies with their latest models that come DCC ready. These are Locomotives run in DC only and that the lights function in a directional mode meaning that the headlight goes only in the direction that the engine is running. Because the 90616 is DCC ready in means that you can simply plug in a DCC decoder and away you go. The board has two types of female plugs for a decoder: the eight pin integral to the board and then the 9 pin with the wires. This allows you to plug in the older eight pin decoder or the 9 pin decoder. If you want to install a sound decoder go directly to the sound decoder and avoid the 90616 adapter. All these take space which is at a premium and direct connections are better. The Athearn 90617 is an adapter that is used with an engined already wired for DCC with a decoder and 9 pin harness in it. If you want to run that engine in DC instead of DCC remove the decoder and plug in the 90617. This way your engine will run in DC with directional lighting .
